Rapunzel in the Sun

This is an illustration based on the fairy tale "Rapunzel" in my vision. As with all the other illustrations in this collection I'm doing my influence on the original stories. Earlier I had put out a poll for which fairy tale you guys wanted me to paint next. Rapunzel won the vote so here she is!

I wanted to turn away from Disney in this version. So I chose to go with red hair (although I truly believe Rapunzel would be a blonde to reflect the subtext of being so close to the sun in the tower). My sister is a natural red head and I've been wanting to paint red hair in a piece for a while so this seemed like the natural choice. Her favorite color is yellow too so I chose to do the dress in it for her. I wanted to give Rapunzel some furry friends so I thought with her hair draped over the edge why not have some squirrels climb up to check out the view with her. This piece actually came together really quick and effortlessly being done in only a couple sittings. Thank god for audiobooks to keep me rooted to the chair. I truly had fun with this one. On to the next!
